Get advice from other students and stand out from the crowd!!
We know we keep telling you about how you should research your options before you apply, and we're about to do it again. It's really important that you look into every part of the course and university so that you've got a proper picture of what's available and whether it'll suit you.
A lot of people start a course, realise it's not what they wanted, and struggle to either carry on with something they don't want to do, or leave and start again. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's best to get it right the first time if you can.
Talk to other students
We can tell you how we think you should choose a course, but if you want to find out more about what it's really like, talk to other students who have been in the same position. Friends or siblings who may already be at uni can tell you more about where they're studying, the course they're doing and uni life in general. You might also want to ask the unis directly if they have current students you can speak to about their experiences, course or any other questions you may have.
Learn from others' experiences
Read through our blogger's journeys on UCAS Connect to see how they've found the application process so far. They've written all sorts of things about the application process that may give you insight into what the year ahead will be like.
You can also watch video diaries on our UCAS.tv video site where you can find out what other students did to prepare, how they've found uni life so far and what fresher's week is really like.
The UCAS Guide and Progression Series books include case studies from previous students studying a wide range of subjects at a wide range of universities and colleges. You can order these from ucasbooks.com. Don't forget UCAS Card holders are entitled to an exclusive discount!
Remember- Although everyone's experience is different, you can get a better idea of what it's like researching, applying and going to uni by speaking to those who have already gone through it.
Stand out from the crowd
When you begin your UCAS application, you'll want to stand out from other applicants who may be competing for the same place at the same uni as you. To help you stand out from the crowd, there are lots of things you can do in the next few months
Speak to your tutors - You may still be unsure about exactly what course you'd like to do or what careers are available after you have studied certain subjects. Take the time to speak to your tutors who can answer some of your questions. Who knows, you might even find out about a career you never knew existed!
Take up work experience or volunteer - Work experience can help you gain insight into a career you may be considering. Not only that, but it is something you can write about in your personal statement that can make you stand out. The same goes for volunteering. Volunteering for an organisation, company or sector related to your future goals can also give you an edge
Make your coursework count - Many students have to complete a special project, extended essay or research project for their qualification. If you are one of these students, try and link any additional projects into your chosen subject or course. By demonstrating your interest and dedication to a particular subject or career, this may help put your application to the top of the pile.
We know the next few months will be hectic with studying and exams but don't forget about your future. Plan ahead, do your research and you will stand out from the crowd!
