Applying for art and design courses

Step 1: Choosing courses

In previous years, there were two routes into art and design. For courses starting in 2010, you apply through the normal route. We send your application to each of your chosen universities and colleges, and you can wait until you have received a decision for each choice before replying to any offers.

When to apply

There are two application deadlines for art and design courses. Universities and colleges decide which deadline to use for each course - it will be either 15 January or 24 March.

Course Search displays the application deadline for each course. If you apply for art and design courses with different deadlines, you can submit your application before 15 January for courses with that deadline, then add further choices before the 24 March deadline using Track (as long as you haven't used all five choices).

Interviews

For most art and design courses, you'll be asked to attend an interview or submit your portfolio. Please check the Entry Profiles for your chosen course(s) on Course Search, contact your chosen universities and colleges or check their websites. If they want to invite you for an interview, this will usually be displayed in Track. You can accept the invitation in Track, or if you are unable to attend, you can request that the university or college offers you a different date.

Art and design foundation courses

Many students complete a one-year art foundation course after Year 12/13 studies to help them progress to higher education. You apply direct to the university or college (the institution will supply its own application form). We have a list of universities and colleges offering these foundation courses. View the list and the universities' and colleges' contact details.
