Why profiles are important

  • When you are first researching available courses, you will often be under pressure and tend to make decisions based on mainly short-term considerations. UCAS is ideally placed to give you the tools and encourage you to think into the medium-term when choosing between subject areas of interest to you. You will then have an extra parameter when deciding between broadly similar courses on offer, and be more able to avoid possible disappointment. Awareness of such issues will also be helpful and reassuring when you are looking for work experience or writing a CV.
  • Information about different careers, though more widely available nowadays, can be difficult to obtain and can also be out-of-date or subject to stereotype impressions. For instance, you might see a subject as purely vocational, or narrowly academic, or difficult to link to A levels, whereas in reality the skills you would acquire at university or college may be far more generic than you might imagine. This means many applicants fail to make their course choices in full knowledge of the facts.
  • After graduation, you might want to move between jobs in your chosen subject area or even between areas. Awareness of the broader skills you will have to offer enables you to feel more confident if you decide to try changing your area of work.
  • Making better informed initial choices will normally mean your entry into working life will be less stressful and better planned around your own vision for your future.
