Each employment profile has an introduction and a list of skills that can be developed through the study of a particular subject. The skills listed in a profile are matched with relevant competencies.
What is a competency?A competency is fundamental knowledge, ability, or expertise in a specific subject area or skill set. We have provided a glossary which describes each competency that is relevant to the employment profiles. These competencies have been grouped into qualities and attributes typically desired by employers. There are six groupings:
Cognitive skills / brainpower; Generic competencies; Personal capabilities; Technical ability; Business and/or organisation awareness; Practical and professional elements.
Each competency is benchmarked against a set of indicators. The indicators within each grouping are listed in the Employers' criteria section.
Go to the Profiles section and click on the relevant subject title to read the introduction. The introduction provides background to the subject and a list of the skills and abilities that can be developed through studying it at higher education level.
Click on the 'employability skills' link at the top of the introduction - this section provides further information about the skills associated with the subject. The six competency groupings are listed below each skill.
Where a competency has been identified for a particular skill, the competency group will be emphasised in bold and the specific competency will be listed beneath it. Click on 'what's this?' next to the group title to view the indicators for each competency.
Use the reflective questions to see which competencies you can demonstrate. Click on each area to bring up a new screen with a list of questions you can reflect on to identify and measure your own skills and to underpin your personal development planning (PDP).
