What happens during Clearing

Step 5: Next steps

Clearing is available from July to applicants who have completed an application but have not managed to secure a place for the current year. For most people it is used after the exam results are published in August.

  • Courses with vacancies at institutions in Scotland will be listed on this website from SQA results day
    (6 August 2013).
  • Courses with vacancies at institutions in the rest of the UK will be listed on this website from A level results day (15 August 2013) and in The Telegraph newspaper.

If your son or daughter is eligible for Clearing, their Clearing Number will be displayed in Track. They can view vacancy lists and contact institutions to discuss their options and suitability for the course in which they are interested. If your son or daughter gives their Clearing Number to a university or college, they can then view their application online and consider them for a place.

The university or college will tell your son or daughter if they can offer them a provisional place. If you son or daughter wants to accept the place, they apply for the course using Track. The university or college will then let us know their decision and it will be displayed in Track.

If your son or daughter wants to apply through Clearing, they should usually have received all their exam results. If they add a choice in Track without discussing it with the university or college, they may decline their request and their application will be delayed.

Read through the Clearing pages in the students' section for more detailed advice about using Clearing.
