CPD workshop: UCAS data for non-data specialists

Overview

UCAS collects data each year from over 500,000 applicants from all over the world who apply to undergraduate courses in the UK. We also collect information from applicants who go through our other admissions services. This data can be of great value to member institutions for planning, marketing, analysing and tracking trends and providing statistics for senior management.

In this workshop, an overview of the data freely available on the UCAS website is described and explained. Specific examples using the Statistical Enquiry Tool and the annual datasets are used to illustrate how to access and interrogate the data for a variety of institution purposes. This is an interactive session, so participants are given time to explore the potential of the data for themselves.

Who should attend?

This workshop will be of value to anyone who requires an awareness of data to support their role in admissions, planning and marketing or who needs to be able to point colleagues to relevant data. The workshop will not require any previous knowledge of working with UCAS data. A basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel will be an advantage but is not essential to benefit from this workshop.

Learning objectives

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • provide an overview of the data available to their own institutions
  • navigate to the data they require on the UCAS website
  • consider how best to use the data for planning and marketing
  • use some basic techniques to display data in a variety of formats, including pivot tables
  • complete an exercise using the Statistical Enquiry Tool and the Annual Data Sets which are available on the UCAS website.
