What are the derived fields?

A number of fields in the UCAS Data for HESA transaction are derived from other information gathered about the applicant in Apply. These fields are:

Highest qualification on entry: This field is derived using data provided by the applicant and the awarding organisations. For a description of how this field is derived please see How does QUALENT3 work?.

Subject qualification aim: This data is derived from the course the applicant has been placed on. The course is split into its corresponding JACS codes. For example, 'English Language & Linguistics and Health Studies' (BQ93) will return B900, Q310, Q100. These codes are stored behind the scenes when a course is created.

Subject percentage: This field is linked to subject qualification aim and will return a set default weighting depending on the type of course the applicant has been placed on. The weightings are as follows:

Single subject = 100
Balanced = 50 / 50
Major - Minor = 67 / 33
Triple = 34 / 33 / 33

Parental occupation: This data is derived from the applicant's answer to the occupational background question in Apply. The applicant enters a free text answer which is matched against a reference table and a corresponding Standard Occupation Classification (SOC2000) code returned.

Socio-economic classification: This field is linked to parental occupation and uses the SOC2000 code to determine a National Statistics Socio-Economic Classification (NS-SEC). Each SOC2000 code sits under an NS-SEC group and is linked accordingly.
