Statements from universities and colleges about the Diploma

Of the UK institutions listed by UCAS as offering higher education (HE) courses, the vast majority have written and provided a generic statement reflecting their position on accepting the Advanced Diploma as a route onto their undergraduate courses. This includes all of the research-intensive Russell Group and 1994 Group universities, and all of the Million+ and University Alliance universities.

UCAS members have submitted course-level admissions information to UCAS for 2010 admissions. This information includes the acceptability for each Line of Learning and guidance for what Additional and Specialist Learning will be required for application to HE.

S90: University of Sussex

We welcome the Advanced Diplomas, which we recognise as meeting the general entrance requirements for 1st year entry. The Progression Diploma alone would not be enough for entry direct to the 1st year. Successful diploma applicants will need to be taking at least one A level as their Additional & Specialist Learning within the diploma and, for some degree programmes, we would require this A level to be in a specific subject. All applicants would be advised to consider their Additional & Specialist Learning options carefully and we would urge applicants to choose an A level related to their chosen degree subject. The theoretical nature of our degrees means we would prefer the extended project to have a written basis (for example a dissertation) rather than taking another form (such as a performance or artifact). We anticipate that we will be looking for an A or B grade in the diploma, plus a high grade in the accompanying A level within the Additional & Specialist Learning.

S93: Swansea University (was Uni of Wales, Swansea)

As a college we will offer the Advanced Diploma, which in real terms is equivalent to over three A levels at the same grade. We wholly support the diploma format, which encourages students to apply academic learning in a vocational (work-related) context. From 2008 learners studying for Advanced Diplomas will be have equal progression opportunities to those undertaking A levels, BTECs and other Level 3 programmes, in line with the agreed UCAS tariff. For specific entry requirements for individual courses, please refer to our prospectus, which is available to view on our web site: www.swindon-college.ac.uk.
