Statements from universities and colleges about the Diploma

Of the UK institutions listed by UCAS as offering higher education (HE) courses, the vast majority have written and provided a generic statement reflecting their position on accepting the Advanced Diploma as a route onto their undergraduate courses. This includes all of the research-intensive Russell Group and 1994 Group universities, and all of the Million+ and University Alliance universities.

UCAS members have submitted course-level admissions information to UCAS for 2010 admissions. This information includes the acceptability for each Line of Learning and guidance for what Additional and Specialist Learning will be required for application to HE.

The following groups have also released statements regarding the Diploma.

To find out more about these groups, visit the university groups page on this site.

D13: Dartington College of Arts

Dartington College of Arts welcomes the new 14-19 Advanced Diplomas. The new advanced specialist diploma at Level 3 (not the Higher Diploma which is level 2) will be considered as an entry qualification to our undergraduate courses and is equivalent to 3.5 A levels. Due to the subject specialisms offered through the new diploma, it is highly suitable for our Media, English and Writing courses. Our Art & Design courses require additional evidence of a candidate's suitability in the form of a portfolio. Particular subject backgrounds such as Music and Theatre may not be adequately covered by the initial diploma specialisms but we advise applicants to contact the College to discuss their individual requirements. Of the initial subject specialisms available, it is likely that 'Creative and Media', 'Information and Technology', 'Land-based and Environmental' and 'Manufacturing and Product Design' are potentially suitable for some of the College's courses.

D22: Dearne Valley College

Dearne Valley College is aware of the changes that are taking place in England in relation to the revised A-levels and GCSEs, as well as the new Diplomas. We are supportive of these changes and welcome applications from students who are undertaking the new 14-19 Diplomas, for entry to our undergraduate programmes.

D26: De Montfort University

De Montfort University recognises the UCAS tariff points attributed to the Progression and Advanced Diplomas and will accept both qualifications as satisfying general entrance requirements for the majority of our undergraduate programmes. Applicants with the Progression or Advanced Diploma will be considered for entry on to programmes in subjects closely related to the Diploma lines currently offered. For entry on to other programmes not directly linked to the current Diploma lines, applications will be judged on their individual merit and we recommend that students undertake the Advanced Diploma with appropriate Additional and Specialist Learning. Where the Principal Learning of a Diploma does not meet an A Level subject entry requirement then specific Additional and Specialist learning will be required. Diploma applicants will normally be invited to attend an interview.

D39: University of Derby

The University of Derby welcomes the new diplomas for entry to higher education. The University is watching the development of the various diploma subjects with interest, but, in general, is currently prepared to take the level 2 diploma as the equivalent to GCSEs and the level 3 diploma as the equivalent to A levels. Offers to students taking diplomas will be made in terms of tariff points. Students should note that the Progression Award (principal plus generic/core learning) will be accepted as the equivalent of one to two A levels and will thus open access to HNDs or FDs. For entry to degrees, students are recommended to take the Advanced Diploma (principal, generic/core learning and specialist/additional learning). Applicants must note also that there are a number of degrees which require certain subject knowledge at level 3, and this will need to be translated into the specialist learning component of the Advanced Diploma.

D45: Kirklees College (Formerly Dewsbury College)

Kirklees College considers the Advanced (Level 3) Diplomas as being an equivalent level qualification to A levels and therefore satisfying the general entrance requirements for entry to an undergraduate programme. Specific requirements will depend on the exact program applied for. Specific Additional/Specialized Learning may be required. Please contact the Admissions Team for support as needed.

D55: Duchy College

Duchy College welcomes applications from students studying the new Diploma qualification. The College recognises the Advanced and Progression Diplomas as indicated by their UCAS tariff values, and these will be accepted as entry qualifications where they demonstrate relevance to the HE programme to which the student is applying. Further details can be found on the College website and in the HE prospectus.

D58: Dudley College of Technology

Dudley College welcomes applications from students studying the new Diplomas.

D65: University of Dundee

The University of Dundee welcomes applications from students with Advanced Diplomas. Please contact the admissions office for details regarding entry requirements.

D86: Durham University

Durham University welcomes applications from students taking Advanced Diplomas in most subject areas. Specific entry requirements including compulsory Diploma course content and exclusions will vary from Department to Department and will be publicised through the usual channels.
