Notes:

1. The applications digest lists the number of applications (choices) made by applicants to individual universities and colleges recruiting students through UCAS for higher education courses starting in autumn 2007 (or the following year for those applying for deferred entry). The choices reported are those made by applicants within the UCAS Main Scheme; choices made in "Extra" are not taken into account. Notifications of acceptances received directly from institutions (Records of Prior Acceptance) and any choices associated with such notifications are also not taken into account in compiling the digest. Choices made under Route B are included irrespective of whether the choice was actually referred to the institution.

2. The data shown are counts of the choices to courses offered via UCAS together with the associated percentage changes based upon the same point in last year's cycle. Separate counts for "Degree" (which includes choices to first degree, Diploma of Higher Education, university diploma, some social work postgraduate degree and some social work part-time courses), Foundation Degree ("FDG") and "HND" - (which includes choices to Higher National Diploma and Higher National Certificate courses) are also provided. Cells are shown as "-" if an institution does not offer "Degree", "FDG" or "HND" courses or did not receive any choices to such course types. Comparisons are not possible for institutions that joined UCAS for 2007 entry. Numbers attaching to those institutions that have totally withdrawn from UCAS membership this year are not included. The figures for 2007 are for choices (from both UK and overseas domiciled applicants) made during the current cycle (since September 2006) up to the 30th June closing date, they include choices made on a deferred basis for entry in 2008 (choices made in previous entry cycles on a deferred entry basis are not counted in the 2007 numbers).

3. The Key to the column "Changed" in the table is as follows:

  • "A" :- Additional Institutions for 2007 (new UCAS member institutions)
  • "E" :- Expanded Institutions for 2007 (relates to the consolidation of two or more UCAS institution codes into a single code, normally as a result of merger or the institution concerned now recruiting on behalf of an institution that has left the membership of UCAS).
  • "R" :- Renamed and recoded for 2007 (UCAS institution code changed for 2007 cycle as a result of a change in the institutional name or title. Note: those changes in name or title which have not resulted in a change of institutional code are shown as "N" or "No Change").
  • "N" :- No change in the UCAS institution code.
  • *: UCAS are aware that during the 2006 entry cycle a campus was exchanged between De Montfort University (D26) and the University of Bedfordshire (B22) - (previously L93 University of Luton). Data within this table does not fully reflect such transfer; therefore caution should be exercised in analysing data for the institutions involved.

4. For "Expanded Institutions" the 2006 data have been combined so that the nearest like for like comparison can be made:

  • 2006 data for Castle College Nottingham (C21) includes that for Broxtowe College, Nottingham(previously B89) and The People's College (previously) P40.
  • 2006 data for University Collegefor the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, Rochester (C93) includes that for Kent Institute of Art and Design (previously K36) and The Surrey Institute of Art and Design, University College(previously S88).
  • 2006 data for Riverside College Halton (R30) includes that for Halton College(previously H06).
  • 2006 data for University Campus Suffolk (S82) includes that for Suffolk College(previously S81) Lowestoft College(previously L82) and West Suffolk College(previously W60).
  • 2006 data for University of the Arts London (U65) includes that for Wimbledon School of Art (previously W69).

5. The type ("Degree", "FDG" or "HND") is based on the current course choice, which may differ from the course choice to which the applicant originally applied e.g. if the latter was invalid, or if a change of course offer has been made.

6. The data refers to choices, NOT applicants. The total number of applicants who had applied by 30 June 2007was 494,842, compared with 469,731 at 30 June 2006.

7. As at 30th June 2007, Main Scheme applicants had made an average of 4.78 Main Scheme choices each compared with an average of 4.74 for 2006 cycle applicants at the same point last year.

8. The number of choices to an institution can sometimes change significantly from one year to the next due to the addition, withdrawal or merger of courses, changes in entry requirements or other local factors not recorded by UCAS.
