Notes:

1. The applications digest lists the number of main scheme applications to individual universities and colleges recruiting students through UCAS for higher education courses starting in autumn 2005 (or the following year for those applying for deferred entry).

2. The data shown are counts of the main scheme applications (choices) to courses offered via UCAS together with the percentage change based upon the same point in last year's cycle. Separate counts for "Degree" (which include first degree, Diploma of Higher Education, university diploma, foundation degree, some Social Work postgraduate degree and some Social Work part-time course applications) and for "HND" (which include HND and HNC applications) are also provided together with the relevant percentage changes. Cells are shown as blank if an institution does not offer "Degree" or "HND" courses or did not receive any applications to such course types. Comparisons are not possible for institutions that joined UCAS for 2005 entry. The figures for 2005 are for all applications (from both UK and overseas applicants) made during the current cycle (since September 2004), and include applications for entry deferred to 2006. (They exclude applications made in previous years for entry this year or next.). Applications to Route B courses are counted irrespective of the preference and round number, i.e. irrespective of whether or not a referral to any institution has actually been made. The figures do not include counts of applications (choices) made within Extra. 2004 year of entry counts are not show for those institutions that left the UCAS scheme prior to the commencement of the 2005 entry cycle.

3. The Key to the column "Changed" in the table and the dataset is as follows:

A: Additional Institutions for 2005 (new UCAS member institutions)

E: Expanded Institutions for 2005 (as a result of merger, subsuming of other UCAS member institution(s), or recruiting for UCAS member institution(s) that have now left the UCAS scheme).

R: Renamed and recoded for 2005 (UCAS institution code changed as a result of name change).

N: No change.

Where changes have occurred, the 2004 data has been combined so that the nearest like for like comparison can be made.

4. The following institutions have merged or been combined for 2005, the 2004 data have combined for these to permit comparisons:

Barnfield College (previously B09) is recruiting through University of Luton (L93)

St Loye's School of Health Studies (previously S54) is recruiting through University of Plymouth (P60).

Yeovil College (previously Y25) is recruiting through Bournemouth University (B50).

University of Wales College of Medicine (previously W10) and Cardiff University (C15) have combined to form a single institution: Cardiff University (C15).

The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) (previously M25) and The University of Manchester (The Victoria University of Manchester) (M20) have combined to form a single institution: The University of Manchester (M20)

Oxford College of FE (previously O30), Oxfordshire School of A&D (previously O80), Rycotewood College (previously R95) and North Oxfordshire College (non-UCAS) have combined to form a single institution: Oxford and Cherwell College (O25).

5. The type ("Degree" or "HND") is based on the current course choice, which may differ from the course choice to which the applicant originally applied e.g. if the latter was invalid, or if a change of course offer has been made.

6. The data refers to applications, NOT applicants. The total number of applicants who had applied by 30 June 2005 closing date was 486,915; 486,208 of these applicants had choices within the UCAS main scheme. These figures compare to 450,147 applicants at 30 June 2004, with 449,374 having choices within the UCAS main scheme.

7. As at the 30 June 2005 closing date, main scheme applicants had each made an average of 4.71 main scheme applications this compares with an average of 4.67 at the same point last year.

8. The number of applications to an institution can sometimes change significantly from one year to the next due to the addition, withdrawal or merger of courses, changes in entry requirements or local factors not recorded by UCAS.
