1. The applications digest lists the number of applications to individual universities and colleges recruiting students through UCAS for higher education courses starting in autumn 2004 (or the following year for those applying for deferred entry).

2. The following institutions have merged for 2004, and the 2003 data have been combined for these to permit comparisons:

Cannington College (C08) is now recruiting through Bournemouth University (B50).

Darlington College of Technology (D10) is now recruiting through University of Teesside (T20).

Halesowen College (H04) is now recruiting through University College Worcester (W20).

Isle of Wight College (I70) is now recruiting through University College Chichester (C58).

Kidderminster College (K42) is now recruiting through University College Worcester (W20).

Lancaster & Morecambe College is now recruiting through University of Central Lancashire (C30).

London Guildhall University (L55) and University of North London (N63) have merged to form London Metropolitan University (L68).

3. The data shown are counts of the applications for Degree, DipHE and university diplomas, and the percentage change on last year; counts of HND and HNC applications and the percentage change; and the equivalent for all applications. Cells are blank if the institution does not offer courses of that type. Comparisons are not possible for institutions that joined UCAS for 2004 entry. The figures for 2004 include all applications (both UK and overseas applicants) made during the current cycle (since September 2003), and include applications for entry deferred to 2005. (They exclude applications made in previous years for entry this year or next.)

4. Notes for institutions: The type (degree/DipHE/Diploma or HND/HNC) is based on the current course, which will differ from the one to which the applicant originally applied if the latter was invalid, or if a change of course offer has been made. All route B applications are included, whether referred to institutions or not.

5. The data refers to applications, NOT applicants. The total number of applicants who had applied by 30 June 2004 was 450,147, compared to 437,615 at 30 June 2003. Applications counted are those made in the UCAS Main Scheme, additional choices made through UCAS Extra are not included within this analysis.

6. As at 30 June 2004 applicants had made an average of 4.7 Main Scheme applications each, this figure is almost identical to the 30th June 2003 average.

7. The number of applications to an institution can sometimes change significantly from one year to the next due to the addition, withdrawal or merger of courses, changes in entry requirements or local factors not recorded by UCAS. For example the University of Manchester is now recruiting its Physiotherapy applicants through the Manchester Metropolitan University.

8. The Key to the variables New/Changed in the table and the dataset is as follows

A: Additional Institutions for 2004.

E: Expanded Institutions (subsumed by another institution).

M: Merged (newly formed institution from existing institutions.

R: Renamed and recoded for 2004.

N: No change.
