Notes:

1. The applications digest lists the number of applications (choices) made by applicants to individual universities and colleges recruiting students through UCAS for higher education courses starting in autumn 2006 (or the following year for those applying for deferred entry).

2. The data shown are counts of the applications to courses offered via UCAS together with the associated percentage changes based upon the same point in last year's cycle. Separate counts for "Degree" (which includes applications to first degree, Diploma of Higher Education, university diploma, some social work postgraduate degree and some social work part-time courses), Foundation Degree ("FDG") and "HND" - (which includes applications to Higher National Diploma and Higher National Certificate courses) are also provided. Cells are shown as "-" if an institution does not offer "Degree", "FDG" or "HND" courses or did not receive any applications to such course types. Comparisons are not possible for institutions that joined UCAS for 2006 entry. Numbers attaching to institutions that have totally withdrawn from UCAS membership this year are not included. The figures for 2006 are for applications (from both UK and overseas domiciled applicants) made during the current cycle (since September 2005) up to the 24 March Route B closing date, they include applications made on a deferred basis for entry in 2007 (applications made in previous entry cycles on a deferred entry basis are not counted in the 2006 numbers).

3. The Key to the column "Changed" in the table and the dataset is as follows:

A: Additional Institutions for 2006 (new UCAS member institutions)

E: Expanded Institutions for 2006 (relates to the consolidation of two or more UCAS institution codes into a single code, normally as a result of merger or the institution concerned now recruiting on behalf of an institution that has left the membership of UCAS ).

R: Renamed and recoded for 2005 (UCAS institution code changed for 2006 cycle as a result of a change in the institutional name or title. Note: those changes in name or title which have not resulted in a change of institutional code are shown as "N").

N: No change.

4. For "Expanded Institutions" the 2005 data have been combined so that the nearest like for like comparison can be made:-

2005 data for the University of Central Lancashire (C30) includes that for Runshaw College (previously R88).

2005 data for The University of Huddersfield (H60) includes that for Barnsley College (previously B13) and Oldham College (previously O10).

2005 data for Thames Valley University (T40) includes that for Reading College and School of Arts & Design Barnsley College (previously R10).

5. The type ("Degree", "FDG" or "HND") is based on the current course choice, which may differ from the course choice to which the applicant originally applied e.g. if the latter was invalid, or if a change of course offer has been made.

All route B applications (choices) are included, whether referred to institutions or not.

Choices made in Extra are not included.

6. The data refers to applications (choices), NOT applicants. The total number of applicants who had applied by 24 March 2006 was 424,560, compared to 438,642 at 24 March 2005.

7. For 2006 applicants made an average of 4.88 choices each compared with an average of 4.86 at the same point last year.

8. The number of applications to an institution can sometimes change significantly from one year to the next due to the addition, withdrawal or merger of courses, changes in entry requirements or local factors not recorded by UCAS.

9. It is not compulsory for institutions to publish their data in the Applications Digest. In the Digest for applications received by the 24 March, three institutions requested that their information was not to be published.
