UCAS' response to the Browne review

'Securing a sustainable future for higher education'

In response to Lord Browne's review, UCAS Chairman Professor Sir Bob Burgess said:

'We welcome Lord Browne's recommendations relating to UCAS services. They represent an excellent fit with UCAS's future strategy and we see this as an exciting opportunity to build on our strong foundations in HE services.'

On the development of UCAS-administered single application gateway for higher education, the Chairman said:

'At its September meeting, the UCAS Board approved a proposal to develop a new single portal for higher education applications that anticipated the demand for a streamlined system catering to more diverse study routes, including part-time provision.

'This proposal also anticipated the possible integration of the student finance and higher education application processes - a key aspect of Lord Browne's recommendations.'

On UCAS' role in effective information and advice to support student choices, the Chairman said:

'The UCAS Board has already approved a substantial investment in improved information and advice services for applicants over the coming five years. Together with guidance services provided at school or college, this will enable us to play a key role in providing resources that give applicants the tools they need to make effective choices.'

On the use of the UCAS Tariff to enable Government to set a minimum entry requirement for student finance entitlement, the Chairman said:

'UCAS announced a review of the UCAS Tariff in July 2010. Lord Browne's recommendations around using the Tariff to define a minimum entry standard for student finance entitlement can be incorporated into the review process.' (see editors' note)

On the proposed joint role for UCAS and HESA in supporting Access Commitments:

'UCAS welcomes Lord Browne's endorsement of the existing strong links between the data and statistics functions within HESA and UCAS. We are keen to work in partnership to develop the recommended performance indicators that support widening participation and fair access for all.'
