With so many things to consider when applying to university through UCAS, it's useful to get some direction. Student finance is one area that can appear daunting and that's why a new short film has been released by the Student Loans Company (LSC) to clear up some of the misconceptions surrounding the issue.
It features prospective students and tries to bust a few myths and set the record straight on student finance. The film covers all that you will need to know if you are applying to a university course starting next year or in 2013.
The LSC's 2012/13 information and guidance was unveiled to hundreds of higher education delegates at its Partner Seminar which took place in Manchester this week.
Director of marketing and communications at the LSC Jenifer Stirton believes it's vital that students, parents and their partners have all the information they need to take the decision to go to university.
"We've launched our information and guidance to support them in understanding the student finance application process from applying to finance to payment and, over time, repayment of their loans," she explains.
"Our 2012/13 myth-busting podcast addresses some of the issues of prospective students."
It should complement the work of the new Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information. It's made up of the National Union of Students, the National Association of Student Money Advisors, UCAS and higher education bodies Universities UK and GuildHE.
Headed by Martin Lewis, founder of moneysavingexpert.com, this body is working to make sure you have all the facts about student finance. As Steve Smith, president of Universities UK, points out, it is essential for applicants to be provided with information on student finance.
He said: "The need for clear and accessible communication on the new fees system is absolutely paramount – but so is the space and ability to show the wide ranging benefits of higher education."
For higher education advisors and anyone else working with young people and adults starting university or college next year, the LSC's IAG Partner Seminars take place annually. This year will also see events held in London on September 28th and Birmingham on October 6th.
UCAS and the Office for Fair Access will be on-hand to provide the latest news, while there will be specialist workshops running throughout the day.
