Universities Week 2012 to celebrate the Olympics

Details of Universities Week 2012 are being released.

Universities Week 2012 is going to celebrate the higher education sector's contribution to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The third annual event, which showcases the strengths and achievements of the UK's universities to the world, will be a great opportunity for anyone applying through UCAS this year to learn more about university.

Next year's event will be held from 30 April to 7 May and will culminate with the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Outdoor Athletics Championships at the Olympic Stadium.

The 2012 Olympic Games will be incorporated as an over-arching theme. The week will highlight the ways universities across the UK have engaged with and contributed to the Games.

Seb Coe, chair of London 2012, said: "I'm delighted that Universities Week 2012 will be celebrating the higher education sector's engagement with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"The Games is a chance for our nation to showcase our talents, skills, culture and sporting abilities. The higher education sector has a vital and diverse role to play in this."

Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK, which organises the event, says the Games are a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity". She adds: "It is also a great way of demonstrating the integral role that our universities are playing in ensuring its success.

"Once again with Universities Week we hope to show that it is not just students who benefit from university, but the whole of UK society."

Whether you are a student, parent or adviser, Universities Week is a great chance to find out more about higher education. Coming near the end of the application process, you can find out what's happening at your choices and attend a range of events that will give you a flavour of what university life is all about.

This year's event proved a big hit. UCAS was involved throughout, helping to share facts and bust some myths about applying to university. Universities Week 2011 also saw the launch of UCAS Connect.
