At the moment you are probably trying to narrow down your choices to just five for your UCAS application. You might be wondering what would happen if you are unsuccessful with all of these and whether you would have to go through Clearing.
The good news is that there is a way to tack on an extra choice at a later date. It's called Extra and opens on February 24th 2012 for anyone applying for a course starting next autumn.
While it is some way off before you can use Extra, perhaps knowing about it will make picking your five choices a little easier.
To use Extra you need to have already made five choices. Once you have received decisions from all these choices and either had no offers or declined all the offers, you can try Extra. Remember though, once you add an Extra choice, you will not be able to accept any of your original choices later.
If you are eligible, a button will pop up on Track which shows you can use Extra. Next, you will need to use Course Search to find vacancies. Any courses still with places will have an 'x' displayed next to them.
Just like when you made your original choices, have a good look through the Entry Profiles section and read up on the course on the institution's website. At this stage it is worth contacting the university or college directly to see if they would accept you.
The process is the same - enter the course details in Track and UCAS will send off your application. It's worth remembering that the university or college will be able to see your original courses, so try not to deviate too much from the subject(s) you picked first.
Accepting an offer through Extra commits you to that course. If you are turned down or decline an offer, you can try for another. But you cannot change a choice on Extra until at least 21 days after you made it.
July 4th 2012 is the last date for applying though Extra, so there is plenty of time to carry out all the research you need to do. But if you don't find a suitable course with Extra, there is no need to panic, as the Clearing process finds places for thousands of students every year.
