More than 21,000 university and college acceptances in Scotland
4 August 2011
Position confirming applicants as of midnight
UCAS has now processed all SQA Highers and Advanced Highers results and as of midnight 21,630 Scottish applicants were accepted into a Scottish university or college, compared to like-for-like figures of 22,043 on Highers results day last year (a decrease of 1.9%).
In total last year, 32,248 Scottish applicants were accepted by universities and colleges, 30,379 at institutions in Scotland.
Andrea Robertson, Director of Customer Operations at UCAS said: "I want to say a huge 'well done' to the thousands of Scottish students who've won a place on the course of their choice.
"But if results haven't quite worked out and you are looking afresh at your options, it may well be you can find a place through Clearing. For people who are flexible and determined, it's possible to find a course that's as fulfilling as your original choice.
"I would also advise anyone who accepts a place to visit UCAS Connect - which brings together all our digital media in one place. From here you can join yougofurther, our own social networking site, and discover future friends about to go to the same university."
With options such as reapplying, part time study or considering other learning opportunities, UCAS advisers are on hand on 0871 468 0 468 to talk applicants through the process. To explore vacancies in Clearing, students should visit the UCAS website to find out all about the courses available.
Last year, 1,935 Scottish students found a place through Clearing, 1,762 at institutions in Scotland.
Some advice for students:
- Read through the information on the UCAS website to find out how Clearing works.
- Look on Track, again on the UCAS site, to check the status of your application and to get your Clearing number if you become eligible.
- Make sure that you're available to speak to universities and colleges - treat your Clearing application like a job application - deal with it yourself. Don't leave it to your parents or friends to sort out.
- Vacancies will be listed at www.ucas.com from today (4 August). Make sure that the content of the course meets your needs, and check the entry requirements.
- Start contacting the universities and colleges about the courses that interest you as soon as you can. A university or college that is interested in you will ask for details such as your Clearing number and your Personal ID. You will also be asked questions about your exam results. If they agree to consider your application you'll need to enter the details in Track.
- If you are accepted onto a course, the university or college will contact us and the confirmation will be displayed on Track.
- If you need help applying through Clearing or have a query about your application, you can contact the UCAS helpline on 0871 468 0 468 between 08:30 and 18:00 on results day (today).
- For expert, independent advice on applying to university or college, taking time out or choosing to enter employment speak to a trained adviser on the Exam Results Helpline. Call 0808 100 8000. Lines open between 08:00 and 20:00 on results day (today).
*NOTE: Applications previously processed by CATCH (Centralised Applications to Nursing and Midwifery Training Clearing House) were processed by UCAS for the first time in 2010.
Our press release last year gives 20,651 as the midnight acceptance figure, due to excluding applicants accepted to ex-CATCH courses, to allow correct comparison with 2009.
