Wait is nearly over for 43,000 Scottish applicants
2 August 2011
More than 43,000 university and college applicants in Scotland are awaiting their grades, with just hours to go until results day on 4 August.
UCAS figures released after 30 June - the deadline for standard applications - show that 43,437 people in Scotland have applied to university or college this year, a small increase of around 0.5 percent on 2010.
Overall 32,248 people in Scotland were accepted last year - 30,379 of them by institutions in that country.
Andrea Robertson, Director of Customer Operations at UCAS said: "If you're among the thousands of applicants waiting for results, it's natural to feel a bit anxious over the coming days.
"But remember - even if your grades aren't high enough for your first choice there are several options open. It's important to make sure you have enough information about your insurance choice and that you get to know the basics of the Clearing process. That way you'll feel as confident as possible on the day.
"Choosing where to study is a big decision that's almost certain to affect the rest of your life, so please give yourself time to research the options.
"The information you need can be found at UCAS Connect, which provides access to our all digital media and advice services from one site."
Last year 1,935 Scottish students found a place through Clearing, and 1,762 of those went to institutions in Scotland.
Clearing for Scottish applicants begins on 4 August when vacancies will be advertised on the UCAS site. Expert advisers from UCAS will be on hand to answer questions on 0871 468 0 468 from 08:30 on results day.
Some advice for students:
- Read through the information on the UCAS website to find out how Clearing works.
- Look on Track, again on the UCAS site, to check the status of your application and to get your Clearing number if you become eligible.
- Make sure that you're available to speak to universities and colleges - treat your Clearing application like a job application - deal with it yourself. Don't leave it to your parents or friends to sort out.
- Vacancies will be listed at www.ucas.com on 4 August. Make sure that the content of the course meets your needs, and check the entry requirements.
- Start contacting the universities and colleges about the courses that interest you as soon as you can. A university or college that is interested in you will ask for details such as your Clearing number and your Personal ID. You will also be asked questions about your exam results. If they agree to consider your application you'll need to enter the details in Track.
- If you are accepted onto a course, the university or college will contact us and the confirmation will be displayed on Track.
- If you need help applying through Clearing or have a query about your application, you can contact the UCAS helpline on 0871 468 0 468 between 08:30 and 18:00 on results day.
- For expert, independent advice on applying to university or college, taking time out or choosing to enter employment speak to a trained adviser on the Exam Results Helpline. Call 0808 100 8000. Lines open between 08:00 and 20:00 on results day.
