UCAS has announced the appointment of two new members to the UCAS Board with immediate effect. Professor David Fleming, Vice-Chancellor of York St John University, was nominated by GuildHE and Mr Rama Thirunamachandran, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Keele University, was elected to represent English institutions.
Speaking of his appointment, Professor Fleming said: 'I am delighted to have been appointed to the board of UCAS. I recognise the importance of the work which UCAS undertakes not just in terms of application handling, but in developing our understanding of entry qualifications and the professionalisation of admissions work.'
Mr Rama Thirunamachandran commented: 'UCAS plays a pivotal role in connecting people to higher education and I am excited about the potential it has to contribute to the HE sector at a time of extensive change.'

Professor Fleming joined York St John University in June 2010. Prior to his appointment, he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sunderland. He holds a first degree in Urban Land Economics, a Postgraduate Diploma, an MBA and a Doctorate of Business Administration. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. His specialist areas encompass student experience enhancement, learning and teaching, international collaboration, research, third-stream initiatives, and widening access and participation.
Mr Thirunamachandran became the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Keele University in June 2008. He was Director for Research, Innovation and Skills at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) from 2002 and was educated at Cambridge in Geography and Natural Sciences. Rama worked on a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funded project carrying out research on the effects of flooding in Bangladesh. He was on the Editorial Board of the higher education journal Perspectives and has written and presented widely on a range of higher education issues.
