UCAS announces Chairman to continue for another two years

UCAS has extended the period of office for its chairman Professor Robert Burgess.

Professor Burgess, who is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, was appointed chairman of UCAS in July 2005 and at today's AGM (Wednesday) institution members voted he should continue in his role for another two years, until July 2011.

Speaking from the UCAS Admissions Conference in Birmingham, Professor Burgess said: "I am delighted to be reappointed as Chairman of UCAS. The organisation plays a pivotal role in encouraging people into higher education and promoting British education internationally. I regard this as a great opportunity to continue my work and place UCAS in a key position to respond to qualification and curriculum initiatives, to government policy and to other changes that affect progress in higher education."

Robert Burgess is Chair of the Higher Education Academy, the Research Information Network, the UUK/GuildHE Teacher Education Advisory Group and the ESRC/Funding Council's Teaching and Learning Research Programme. He is a member of the British Library Board and an Academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences. He is currently chairing the UUK/GuildHE implementation group on the Higher Education Achievement Report and Degree Classifications on which he has produced three reports.

Anthony McClaran, Chief Executive UCAS, commented: "Professor Burgess has led UCAS through some exciting times - he has overseen the move to fully electronic application and brought vision and experience at a time of growth and change. This experience will be invaluable as UCAS seeks to appoint a new chief executive."
