With primary responsibility for providing shared admissions services for UK higher education institutions, UCAS has recently developed an ambitious five year strategy aimed at streamlining and enhancing its services to the sector at a time of unprecedented change. Employing over 400 staff, UCAS provides a range of services to complement the core admissions role as well as completing research, consultancy and advisory work for applicants, schools, colleges, careers services, professional bodies and employers.

The organisation now has a range of critical initiatives to deliver in order to support the sector through changes in the provision of higher education, the way it is funded and the consequences for admissions processes and applicant information.

Role description:

The UCAS development team is responsible for delivering a wide range of products that have the potential to influence the lives of every young person in the United Kingdom. From our impressive offices located in Cheltenham, we are seeking a driven and passionate Technical Delivery Manager to join a thriving technical team.

The successful candidate will lead a high-performance, cross-functional development team of eight to deliver change into the existing estate and develop new solutions and services. To be considered for this role you must have a proven web development background in ASP.NET, C#, MVC; team leadership experience with the ability to mentor and critique technical output; strong communication skills; hands-on approach, with a desire to innovate and to build a process of continuous improvement.

Role responsibilities:

  • To line manage a team of eight, with a focus on performance management and raising technical capability.
  • To act as a Scrum master to support the delivery of multiple projects, with a cross-functional team comprising of developers, testers and strong business representation.
  • To provide technical leadership and innovation in all aspects of solution development.
  • To work with other technical teams including third party suppliers when required to deliver solutions.
  • To investigate, suggest and where appropriate implement new technologies.
  • To prioritise and plan workload of team in order to meet project deadlines.
  • To help define and develop coding standards.

Role requirements:

  • Experience of managing a development team and project management.
  • Proven experience of working within an Agile development methodology. Scrum master certification is preferred.
  • Extensive experience of developing ASP.NET web applications using C#, familiar with the .NET framework. Java experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience of developing scalable, high performance web applications, including cloud based solutions.
  • Excellent understanding of system testing techniques and technologies, specifically TDD/BDD approach.
  • Effective communicator with excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to present to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Confident, motivated, inspirational individual that is passionate about technology.
